Labor Story

Feb 5, 2010
It was a beautiful winter day. From my chair at work I could see the snow falling and it was a beautiful scene, but I was feeling antsy. So after a full work day, Ben and I lapped twice around the mall with vigor. After dinner we treated ourselves to a french impressionist musical performance. We thought it would be fun if we had to run out of the church due to a early labor. But alas, we had a lovely uneventful date. Little did we know it would be last time we would be out as a carefree married couple.

Awoke at 4:30am with awful cramps. Was I going to be able to go back to sleep? No. Were they real contractions? What if I got up and had a glass of water? And they still came: 15 minutes apart, irregular? Bloody show happened at 5:30am. Ok, I'm not crazy; these are contractions, but labor could be a few days off yet. At 6:00am my water broke. Call the doctor. "Come on in to the hosptial." Ok, but we'll take showers first. But contractions were 7 minutes and then 4 mintues apart. Ben starts to freak out, "We have to go now." The car ride was painful, but short. Walked up to the L/D nurses station at 6:45. Shift change, and all the nurses looked at us as if to say, 'are you lost?' "Dr. Kelly told me to come here; I'm in labor," I stated. They took me to triage, not knowing the urgency of my situation. And then it all blurs: I can't sit long. Ben has to answer questions for me. 'You'd be a good candidate for natural, if you thought about it.' Maybe give me IV morphine. Roll me down the hall. Ask me more questions I can't answer. Oh, the midwife is in the hospital for another delivery. Try to start the IV between contractions. I feel like pushing! Ok, they check and I'm 8cm dilated. Forget about the pain medicine. The nurses help me through a few pushes. Then the midwife steps in and takes control. Is she really asking me to push the baby out--like it's really happening? No way! 17 minutes of pushing, and Lydia Marie Pulley arrives at 8:00am! I'm shocked and relieved that it's over. No more pregnancy, no more contractions, hello skinny belly, hello Lydia, hello parenthood!
